The Victoria Cross

The Victoria Cross (VC) is the highest and most prestigious military decoration awarded to British soldiers. It recognizes acts of extraordinary bravery in the face of the enemy and has achieved an almost legendary status, with recipients honored as true heroes.

During the Battle of Arnhem, five Victoria Crosses were awarded to exceptionally brave soldiers:

Lieutenant John Hollington Grayburn
Flight Lieutenant David Samuel Anthony Lord
Captain Lionel Ernest Queripel
Lance-Sergeant John Daniel Baskeyfield
Major Robert Henry Cain

On this tour, our experienced local guide will bring the story of the Battle of Arnhem to life through historical photos, eyewitness accounts, and detailed narratives. You’ll learn about the remarkable acts of courage that earned these five soldiers the Victoria Cross and why the award is held in such high regard.

You’ll visit key locations where these soldiers fought valiantly and, in some cases, made the ultimate sacrifice. A stop at the Oosterbeek War Cemetery is also included, where you can pay your respects at the graves of three Victoria Cross recipients:

As a military history enthusiast, the Battle of Arnhem was my primary reason for visiting. David did an absolutely fantastic job. His depth of expertise on the battle, the context surrounding it, and the anecdotes from those who fought in it made it a truly memorable experience. He has literally written books on the subject and you can see his passion and knowledge coming through, whether it’s discussing small unit tactics or the personalities involved in the battle. As an ex-coach driver, I’m used to driving this tour more than a few times. I have to say, this was by far, the best tour I’ve taken on Arnhem. Vrijdag  27-06-25 hebben wij met 7 collega's (Ex-militairen en dienende militairen van de Nederlandse en Belgische Marine) een fantastische Battlefield Tour over de Slag om Arnhem gedaan. Vanaf het eerste moment waren we onder de indruk van de enorme kennis van onze gids, Arnold. Hij vertelde elk detail met zoveel passie en enthousiasme, dat het voelde alsof we zelf even terug in de tijd stapten. De manier van vertellen maakte de geschiedenis niet alleen begrijpelijk, maar ook levendig en meeslepend. We hingen aan zijn lippen bij elk verhaal. We hebben ontzettend genoten van deze indrukwekkende tour en daarnaast veel nieuwe kennis opgedaan over een belangrijk stuk geschiedenis, dat nu nog meer tot leven is gekomen. Een absolute aanrader voor iedereen die meer wil weten over de Slag om Arnhem. Nogmaals heel veel dank aan Arnold en de organisatie voor deze onvergetelijke ervaring!
