Cycling Tour: The 4 hour Battle of Arnhem – From Bridge to Bridge

During this unique cycling tour, you will discover what happened in and around Arnhem during the Second World War, with a special focus on the Battle of Arnhem. Our experienced guide will tell you all about Operation Market Garden (17–25 September 1944), a large-scale Allied military operation that unfortunately failed.

The operation, mainly led by the British, aimed to capture nine strategic bridges, including the crucial Rhine Bridge in Arnhem. Although the cities of Eindhoven and Nijmegen were liberated, the Allied forces were unable to hold their position in Arnhem and at the Rhine Bridge.

During this 4-hour cycling tour, our local guide will take you past important locations connected to the Battle of Arnhem.

During the route, you will cycle past famous sites from Operation Market Garden, remarkable monuments, and locations where impressive personal stories come to life. The tour combines history, nature, and beautiful views of the surrounding area.

🌉 John Frost Bridge
The tour starts at the iconic John Frost Bridge. Here, you will hear the story of the British perimeter and the fierce fighting around the bridge.

🚲 Klingelbeek & Railway Tunnel
Via Utrechtseweg and Klingelbeekseweg, you will cycle towards Oosterbeek. At the railway tunnel, attention is given to the stories surrounding the Gronert family.

🌳 Baskeyfield Tree
The route continues along Benedendorpseweg to the famous Baskeyfield Tree. This impressive location commemorates John Baskeyfield VC, who showed extraordinary bravery here during the Battle of Arnhem.

🌉 View of the Railway Bridge
Along the way, you will enjoy beautiful views over the Rhine and Arnhem’s railway bridge, a strategic location during Operation Market Garden and an important target during the fighting.

⛪ Old Church & House of Kate ter Horst
In the centre of Oosterbeek, you will visit the Old Church and the former home of Kate ter Horst, better known as the “Angel of Arnhem.” Here, you will hear more about her remarkable role during the battle and the famous Lonsdale speech.

🏛️ Airborne Museum Hartenstein
Via a quiet route through the forest, you will continue to the Airborne Museum Hartenstein, the former headquarters of the British troops during the Battle of Arnhem.

Please note: admission to the museum is not included in this cycling tour.

🪦 Airborne Cemetery Oosterbeek
The tour continues to the Airborne Cemetery Oosterbeek. Here, the guide will tell you about the soldiers who lost their lives during the Battle of Arnhem.

🌅 Return to the Rhine Quay
The cycling tour ends again at the Rhine Quay in Arnhem. A special ending to an impressive journey full of history, personal stories, and historical locations.

✨ This cycling tour is a unique way to experience the history of the Battle of Arnhem while also enjoying the beautiful surroundings of Arnhem and Oosterbeek.

OPTIONAL:

Along the route, you will make a stop at a lunchroom where there is an opportunity to have lunch. The costs are at your own expense and are not included in the price of the cycling tour.

For safety reasons, it is important that one person is appointed as the rear “safety rider.” This person ensures that the group stays together and that everyone crosses safely.

Practical Information

The price depends on the group size (maximum 14 people) and whether you bring your own bicycle or rent one from us.

If you bring your own bicycles, the starting and ending point will be near the John Frost Bridge.

If you rent bicycles through us, the starting and ending point will be at Reerink Rijwielen Arnhem Zuid, Huissensestraat 45.

Met ons gezelschap van 22 mannen hebben wij na twee inspannende dagen op de golfbaan te Heelsum, die is aangelegd in het gebied van de drop- en landing zones van 17 september '44, dus op historische grond, geboeid geluisterd naar een indrukwekkende presentatie van ca 1,5 uur over de slag bij Arnhem door Thijs van der Laan. Thijs is gepensioneerd officier van de luchtmobiele brigade en wist als militair vakman alle aspecten rond voorbereiding, logistiek en uiteindelijk dramatische verloop van de operatie feilloos uit te leggen. Ook wist hij de persoonlijke aspecten en emoties rond de moedige militairen aangrijpend over te brengen. Thijs speelt een belangrijke rol bij het in ere houden van dit erfgoed en het jaarlijks eerbetoon aan de gesneuvelden. Wij zijn hem zeer erkentelijk voor het verzorgen van dit bijzondere onderdeel van onze golf reis.

He was extremely thorough, and shared many great stories, including his ongoing work to help locate missing soldiers all these years later. Also a great fit because we weren't able to do the amount of walking called for by some of the other tours. If only the trains in the Netherlands were so accessible! In any case, I highly recommend the Arnhem battlefield tour if you have even a passing interest in WWII or Arnhem's history.

I cannot recommend this agency, tour and guide enough. I wanted a personalized birthday present for my husband and that is exactly what I received  - despite booking it only weeks in advance. Net als vorig jaar hebben wij op vrijdag 03-07-2026, een groep bestaande uit militairen, oud-militairen en politiemedewerkers, opnieuw deelgenomen aan een indrukwekkende begeleide fietstocht in het kader van de Slag om Arnhem. Ook deze keer betrof het een tocht van ongeveer vier uur, waarbij wij vanaf het Airborne Museum richting de John Frostbrug zijn gefietst en onderweg verschillende belangrijke locaties uit de geschiedenis van Operatie Market Garden hebben bezocht. Vorig jaar hebben wij de Battlefield Tour naar de landingsterreinen gereden onder begeleiding van gids Arnold. Zijn uitgebreide kennis, enthousiasme en persoonlijke manier van vertellen hebben toen veel indruk op ons gemaakt. Daarom keken wij ernaar uit om ook dit jaar opnieuw een historische fietstocht te maken. Ditmaal werden wij begeleid door gids Sander, en ook deze ervaring was wederom bijzonder waardevol. Sander beschikt over een indrukwekkende hoeveelheid kennis over de Slag om Arnhem en weet deze op een zeer boeiende, duidelijke en enthousiaste manier over te brengen. Niet alleen de grote lijnen van de militaire operaties kwamen aan bod, maar juist ook de persoonlijke verhalen, de moeilijke omstandigheden en de enorme uitdagingen waarmee de betrokken militairen en burgers destijds te maken kregen. Door zijn manier van vertellen kwamen de gebeurtenissen tijdens Operatie Market Garden echt tot leven. Tijdens de tocht werd op indringende wijze duidelijk welke enorme offers er zijn gebracht en hoeveel moed, doorzettingsvermogen en opoffering deze periode heeft gevraagd van alle betrokkenen. De combinatie van de historische locaties, de uitgebreide uitleg van Sander en zijn passie voor het onderwerp zorgden ervoor dat deze fietstocht niet alleen leerzaam, maar ook zeer indrukwekkend was. Sander, hartelijk dank voor deze bijzondere en zeer geslaagde middag. Wij hebben met veel plezier naar je verhalen geluisterd en enorm genoten van de manier waarop je jouw kennis met ons hebt gedeeld. Wij kunnen iedereen van harte aanbevelen om één van deze fietstochten te maken. Of je nu al veel kennis hebt van de geschiedenis of er juist voor het eerst mee in aanraking komt, deze tours zijn absoluut de moeite waard en laten een blijvende indruk achter. Vrijdag  27-06-25 hebben wij met 7 collega's (Ex-militairen en dienende militairen van de Nederlandse en Belgische Marine) een fantastische Battlefield Tour over de Slag om Arnhem gedaan. Vanaf het eerste moment waren we onder de indruk van de enorme kennis van onze gids, Arnold. Hij vertelde elk detail met zoveel passie en enthousiasme, dat het voelde alsof we zelf even terug in de tijd stapten. De manier van vertellen maakte de geschiedenis niet alleen begrijpelijk, maar ook levendig en meeslepend. We hingen aan zijn lippen bij elk verhaal. We hebben ontzettend genoten van deze indrukwekkende tour en daarnaast veel nieuwe kennis opgedaan over een belangrijk stuk geschiedenis, dat nu nog meer tot leven is gekomen. Een absolute aanrader voor iedereen die meer wil weten over de Slag om Arnhem. Nogmaals heel veel dank aan Arnold en de organisatie voor deze onvergetelijke ervaring!

Hoewel er in onze groep meerdere mensen zaten met al behoorlijk wat voorkennis over de Slag om Arnhem, wist Sander zelfs hen nog te verrassen en te imponeren met zijn diepgaande kennis en oog voor detail. Het niveau waarop hij de geschiedenis beheerst en weet over te brengen is echt uitzonderlijk. Ook met de vragen onderweg kon hij goed uit de voeten. Daarnaast is zijn bevlogenheid duidelijk merkbaar. Sander vertelt het verhaal met zoveel enthousiasme en betrokkenheid, dat ook deelnemers zonder uitgebreide voorkennis moeiteloos worden meegenomen in het verhaal. Hij weet complexe gebeurtenissen helder en levendig uit te leggen, waardoor de geschiedenis echt tot leven komt. De combinatie van zijn enorme kennis en zijn passie voor het onderwerp maakt deze tour bijzonder leerzaam én boeiend van begin tot eind. Kortom: een indrukwekkende ervaring die wij iedereen van harte kunnen aanbevelen!

The day I had booked had a 'Red' warning for the heatwave and accommodations had to be made to work round this. Petra at Arnhem Life kept me informed at all times of the situation. Ruud was my guide and was brilliant. A local guide with expert knowledge,  passion and professionalism. Had me reaching for a tissue a couple of times. Recently read a couple of books about the battle and Ruud made it all fall into place superbly. Would highly recommend Arnhem Life and Ruud.
