Arnhem King’s Night & Day
In the 19th century, the national holiday was the Waterooday to celebrate the liberation from French occupation. Over time, the day was less and less celebrated. To still support the importance of national unity, the princess day on the 31st of August was invented. The first princess day celebration was for Wilhelmina in 1891. When she became queen, it naturally transformed into a queen’s day.
Nowadays, it is the day to celebrate the birthday of the reign as the head of the state. Currently, it is the King Willem-Alexander, thus the king’s day is on his birthday on the 27th of April. It is only moved by a day to a Saturday when it would fall on the weekday Sunday. The next time this will be the case is in 2025.
Celebration
Through the time the celebration changed slightly. At the queens day of Queen Juliana, the Dutch would gather for a procession and offer gifts, mostly flowers, to the royal family, which was standing at the Gates of Paleis Soestdijk. With Queen Beatrix, the Royals went to two places in the Netherlands to show themselves to their people. In 2009, there was a murder attempt with a car crashing into the procession. 8 people died at that event. Willem-Alexander continues the tradition of Beatrix to go to several places on King’s day.
There are celebrations organized in the whole country. The day before, it is already starting with the ribbon rain, where dozens of Dutchies get awarded for their deeds. The following night is also called the King’s Night with a lot of organized parties.
The color orange
The supermarkets are full of orange objects such as heads, glasses, nail polish and a lot more. There is nothing, which is not offered in orange at that time – even alcohol and condoms are sold in orange. On the day before the king’s day and the day itself, the entire city is filled with orange flags and people dressed up in orange. But why orange, which is not part of the Dutch flag (red-white-blue)? This is not entirely correct. Before the French occupied the Netherlands it was orange-white-blue. It is a reference to the royal bloodline of Oranje-Nassau, thus the number one color on King’s day.

For this night the Jansplein changes into a huge dancefloor, where you can dance until the early morning. The band Anderkovver is coming again to celebrate this great day! These men really cover everything from 80’s, 90’s, 00’s…, so even grannies will step up to dance (if you bring them:D) Afterwards, theDJ Rob van Genderen will play music with a video wall, creating an amazing atmosphere. The best is that it is very broad from disco, festival, and Dutch hits- everything will be there to enjoy. Additionally, the Cafe Sint Jan, Taphuys Arnhem en Café Colours stay open deep into the night. The entry is FREE.
