It was the biggest battle during WW2 in The Netherlands and left Arnhem in ruins. This lead to the city being evacuated on September 23rd 1944. About 150 thousand people left their home only to take that they could carry by foot or on a cart. A hand full of people stayed behind such as the police, firebrigade and caretakers of Burgers´ Zoo.
After 7 months people came back to Arnhem where only 1% of the houses were well enough to live in. The Germans vandalised almost all the houses. Tables, plates, bedlinnen, windows… nothing was let usable.
To date, many Brits and Americans visit Arnhem to remember the battle with a peak in September on the dates when the battle took place.
