Everybody knows the game Monopoly, childhood memories of family fun -this was only when you were winning of course, the game afternoons or night more than ones ended when someone flipped the game over and angry left the room. But.. we are all grown up now and can renew the love for the game with a special edition: an Arnhem edition!
In this game you can become owner of Burgers’ Zoo, Nederlands Openluchtmuseum (Openair Museum) or GelreDome. How cool is that? My thoughts wander off… I pretend I actually am the owner of Burgers’ Zoo and not only the staff but also all the animals know me. They all greet me in the morning, in a “Disney” kind of way. How about owning the Gelredome? Attending free football matches, and knowing the Vitesse team personally and seeing every concert (like Justin Bieber?) in your very own sky box… If only!

Entering the “Open Arnhem Monopoly Championship”

I could not help myself and pre ordered a game a while ago. Not too long after I got an invite in my mailbox to attend the “Open Arnhem Monopoly Championship”. I immediately signed up. I love these kind of events that stand for a fun (while winning) afternoon and bringing people together.
In all honesty, I kind of forgot signing up. A few days before the event I got a reminder in my mailbox with the program for the day. Whyyyyyy did I sign up for this again? I was looking forward to a relaxing Saturday, go to the marked, play some candy crush, meet a friend for coffee.. But no, I signed up to pay Monopoly. Surely I was not going to win…. I am not competitive, really don’t care if I win or lose, can’t remember the last time I played the game.
But I made my way to nursing home Vreedenhoff where the championship took place. To become a winner you had to win 2 games. 16 people entered the competition and they were divided over 4 tabled. The winner of each table had to play another match, and whoever won that game would be crowned winner of the “Open Monopoly Arnhem Championship”.

First round

I had a good conversation with myself before stepping in the gaming area. “Ok, so we will play the 1st round, of course loose and then we can go”. I found a place at one of the gaming tables and shook hands with my co –contestants. The game had a time limit of 1,5 hour and as time went on I really started liking the game. I had a good time, and after a while someone even said “I think you will win this round”. “Well, let’s give it some time and see how things go” I replied, thinking about my free afternoon. I did win the game by a difference of 150 “money”.

Earning a place at the winners table

So, I earned a place at the winners table, kept my boat (pawn) for good luck and decided to make the best of it. The Media Markt would provide a price, so why not try a little harder. It would probably be a coupon for 25 euro or something, I was thinking about that I could get for this money. Across from me sat another winner, a 14 y/o boy, who looked a little younger, and that made him crowd favourite. I gave him my most intense “I’m gonna beat you” look and asked him if he feared me yet (Don’t worry, it was in a friendly way…). He told me that he knew what the prize was, and he was willing to share this information. “The prize is a Samsung tablet”.

You should not have told me that…

I replied with: “Ohh you should not have told me that”. You see, I don’t own a tablet, and really do want one. Two other opponents sat down, we wished each other luck and the final game started. We had another 1,5 to gain the most ground in Arnhem and build some houses and hotels (in the colour black and yellow.. The colours of the Vitesse football team). The boy across from me did very well and dominated the game. Things were not looking good for the other two players or myself. But, things changed during the last 45 minutes. The boy made a trade with me which game me a street. I now owned the Korenmarkt, Jansplaats and the Rijnkade. I also had a little money so I bought some houses. Such a good move! The others kept hitting these desired places. It bankrupted the guy left of me, and in the last 8 minutes is also ended the game of the boy across from me. It was clear I won the game. I could not believe it! I actually won :).

I’m the Monopoly Arnhem Champion of 2016!

Many congratulations in my direction followed. I received beautiful flowers, a cup, AND a tabled (and case). I now was the Monopoly Arnhem Champion of 2016. I also had to promise to defend my title next year, which I definitely will.
So, do you want to compete against me next year? Follow our Facebook page and in time we will promote the event. I highly recommend you to enter. I had such a fun afternoon, and I am sure you will too.
Thank you Monopoly Arnhem, Stichting Vreedenhoff and the Media Markt for making this event possible. Hopefully it will become an yearly event in Arnhem.
