Statues in Arnhem
In Arnhem you can find some 55 statues, The oldest ones date from 1712, Neptune & Venus, Jupiter & Juno, Pluto & Proserpine, a Bacchant (Bacchus) & Bacchante. You can find them on the Jansbuitensingel and they are put there by Theodore Boendermaker who owned the singel’s park. In november 1944 (during WW2) most of them got damaged but they were restored, although not always quite accurate. For instance: Pluto is no longer holding a trident, he is stuck holding a club now.
The last statue that was added is also one of the, if not so the biggest one we have in Arnhem. The aardvark, made by Florentijn Hofman, was a gift to the city from Burgers Zoo. The zoo celebrated their 100th birthday in 2013 and wanted to give something back to the city.
Ardvark by Florentijn Hofman
The Ardvark is 30m long, 9m high and 13m wide, definitely worth to go and take a look at! You can find it at the Bartokpark. TIP: Go to the top level in Rozet (located also at the Bartokpark) and have a great view over Arnhem and ofcource the aardvark.
